Chapter 44
Chapter 44
"But I still want to live on my own. I don't want to spend Lenny's money. He may have lots of it, but it
doesn't change the fact that money doesn't grow on trees. Besides, a man's money should only be
used by his beloved woman. I'm Lenny's ex-wife. It's inappropriate for me to use his money. I know my
place," Scarlet said.
"Oh, Scarlet. We are so different from each other. How did we become best friends? How I wish I could
give you a good thump. You've wasted a year of your life being married to Lenny. You deserve the
money he's offering you. And do you think Lenny cares about spending a million dollars a month on his
ex-wife? That's chump change to him. You don't have to feel sorry for him or guilty at all."
Yasmin rolled her eyes at Scarlet.
"Anyway, I have to follow up on a project with my professor this afternoon. I can't accompany you."
"That's okay. I'll just hang out in the library."
The two parted ways at the canteen.
Scarlet was walking alone when someone suddenly rushed over to her. She recognized him. He was a
senior student and the president of the student union.
"Hi," Scarlet muttered in a daze.
"Hey, Scarlet. I like you. Will you be my girlfriend?"
Then, he took out a bunch of red roses from behind.
Hearing this, Scarlet was stunned for a moment. When she was married to Lenny, she was obligated to
have her affections reserved only for him. She rejected suitors almost on a regular basis, telling them
that she already had a boyfriend.
But now, she was a single woman once again. Still, she didn't want to entertain anyone. The idea of
entering a new relationship didn't appeal to her at all.
She hesitated for a moment and smiled. "I'm sorry, but I already like someone else."
"I know. You have always said that, but you are still single. I'll graduate and leave school next year.
Can't you give me a chance? If you don't let me prove myself to you, how will you know that I'm worth NôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
it?"
Scarlet's new suitor was anxious.
Hearing what he said, Scarlet couldn't help thinking that his logic was ironclad and irrefutable. She
actually thought that he had a point.
But... She just didn't like him.
Since she had no feelings for him, it was wrong to trifle with his feelings and lead him on.
"Sorry, but I really like that person very much. Whether we are together or not, it doesn't change how I
feel about him," Scarlet lied without even blinking. She used to feel guilty whenever she told a lie. But
after doing it many times, she came to think that it wasn't a big deal. Anyway, her excuse was the
same.
"At least tell me why he's better than me. Let me know why your heart belongs to him." Her suitor
spoke reluctantly.
"He's different. There's an insurmountable gap between us that will take a miracle for me to overcome.
But I've decided that when I graduate and make something of myself, I will try my best to be with him."
Scarlet continued to talk nonsense and was almost moved by her own made-up story.
"I see. It turns out that my rival in love is Professor Smith. I really can't compare with him."
"Professor Smith?" Scarlet said in astonishment. She was only lying to stop her suitor from pursuing
her. She didn't expect that he would misunderstand and think that she was in love with her professor.
"Aren't you talking about him?"
"Yes, it's Professor Smith!"
"But there are so many people who like him. He doesn't care about you at all."
"That won't matter if you truly like someone. And thank you for letting me know how you feel about me.
I truly appreciate it. I also hope that one day, I will be as brave as you to pursue my beloved. But I can't
be with you. Don't waste your time on me anymore."
Hearing this, Scarlet's suitor lowered his head and left.
Unbeknownst to Scarlet, there was someone familiar to her that was watching not far away. They were
separated by a small patch of woods.
The president of the college showed Lenny around the campus.
Lenny took part in a charity activity that funded poor college students and built a teaching building.
The president invited him to attend the school's centennial celebration.
Unexpectedly, as he walked through the small patch of woods, he saw something that made him stop
in his tracks.
He saw Scarlet not far away. And she was talking to a male student who was offering her a bouquet of
red roses.
