Part 98 # Collision!
“What?” Andre froze when the driver signaled through his eyes. “What’s happening?” he asked, turning to look behind, followed by the lawyer and Lara. They clearly saw two black cars seemingly tailing them.
“It seems we’re being followed, Mr. Andre. I’ll try to evade them.”
“Check it first! Are we really being followed?”
The driver nodded. He then tried to accelerate the vehicle and turned the signal to the right as if changing lanes. Sure enough, the two cars behind them also moved to the right, instead of overtaking them.
“Damn it!” The driver then turned on the left signal and slowly steered towards the left lane. He would drive the vehicle as fast as possible to avoid the radar of those two suspicious cars.
The two cars took the left lane again as before. They were truly following the movements of Andre and Lara’s vehicle in front of them.
“Ndre… I’m scared,” Lara gripped Andre’s arm tightly. She was reminded of the accident she had with Mahya some time ago.
“Calm down, Lara. We’ll be okay,” Andre replied, gently holding Lara’s hand, although his heart was also racing as the speedometer increased inside their car.
“What should we do?” Lara held her breath as if suffocating from the tense situation. The vehicle was speeding up, but the two cars behind them were still chasing after them.
The lawyer tried to maintain calmness, “Stay calm, Ma’am. We’ll find a way out.”
Suddenly, the two cars drew closer, trapping them on the relatively empty road. “Sir! What should we do?” Andre urged, trying to understand the situation. The two lanes ahead led to different roads.
The driver should take the left side if he wanted to return to Andre’s apartment, but those two suspicious cars were squeezing their vehicle as if directing them towards the lane desired by them!
“They’re leading us to the Bekasi route, Sir!” The driver panicked as the left side of the car was being squeezed.
“Be careful!” Andre shouted, signaling to just turn right. “We’ll go to Bekasi for now, it’s okay! Just don’t let any accident happen!”
“Understood, Sir!”
“Ndre!” Lara was truly terrified. Along the way, she closed her eyes and took cover behind Andre’s sturdy back.
With high speed, he drove the car towards Bekasi, trying his best to avoid other vehicles on the busy road.
“We have to hurry!” the lawyer urged, watching the car behind them getting closer. For the time being, their car could escape from the siege of those mysterious men.
Lara held onto the seat tightly, feeling the adrenaline pumping hard within her. Andre hugged her and tried hard to protect Lara from the impact as the car sped up to avoid the pursuit.
“Make a turn out there!” Andre commanded, pointing to a small road that seemed to be an alternative route.
“Okay, Sir! I’ll try to erase their tracks!” the driver responded while still focusing on the road ahead.
The car sped quickly, turning at every corner and trying as much as possible to cover their tracks. The two cars that had been tailing them disappeared for a while because they managed to deceive them by following the flow of some local vehicles moving in tandem. The small road was quite crowded with motorcycles and some small cars that seemed to belong to the local residents.
“Oh no! They’re visible again!” The tension inside the car intensified as the driver once again caught sight of the two mysterious cars through the windshield. “I’ll turn towards the farm!” he said, accelerating the car even faster to pass through the undulating road connecting the narrow road with the fields ahead.
Each turn took them further from the pursuit, but also increased the uncertainty about the terrain they were traversing.
After what felt like a very slow time, the driver finally stopped the car in a narrow alley on the outskirts of the city. Several large trucks managed to block the pursuit of the cars, just after they exited the rice field area.
“We’re safe here, at least for the time being,” said the driver, breathing heavily.
“Thank you, Mr. Driver. You saved us,” Lara thanked him meaningfully.
“You’re welcome, Ma’am. It’s my duty,” said the driver with a relieved smile. The driver, recently recruited by Andre, was not just any driver. He hired him from a martial arts academy after considering that Lara might be in danger.
“You’ve got the right choice, Ndre,” whispered Lara as they reconsidered the decision to hire this driver as a bodyguard through the lawyer’s suggestion. Lara’s case was not ordinary; violence might occur.
The readiness of the driver in such a critical situation made Lara and Andre feel relieved. They truly didn’t miscalculate that events beyond their comprehension like this would surely happen.
“Let’s rest here for a while to throw them off. In an hour, we’ll continue the journey,” the driver said, lighting his cigarette.
“Alright,” Andre agreed to his driver’s suggestion. They then sat in silence, savoring the success of escaping from the threatening danger. Although the wounds and trauma still lingered, Lara appeared resilient. She was just a little cold because the AC temperature in the car was quite low.
“Here,” Andre handed her his jacket so Lara wouldn’t feel cold.
“Thank you,” Lara hugged her arms after Andre put the jacket on her. She felt grateful for successfully avoiding the pursuit that could have been dangerous. Lara truly didn’t know what the motives and goals of the men who had been tailing their car since earlier were, but she was sure that their intentions were not good.
Unbeknownst to them, an hour had passed. Lara and Andre fell asleep, as did the lawyer accompanying them. The driver put out his cigarette after several puffs. He then opened the car door and looked around to make sure they were no longer being watched.
“It seems safe,” he murmured, feeling a somewhat calm atmosphere around the alley.
Andre woke up and rubbed his eyes. He felt the vehicle starting to move. “Are we continuing the journey, Sir?” he asked.Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
“Yes. It seems safe,” the driver said, remaining vigilant. They didn’t know if those cars would return to stalk them or had truly gone as hoped.
“Alright. Be careful.”
The car resumed its journey, cutting through the roads connecting different provinces from the residence of their employer. At this point, they were in the West Java region, although not too far from Andre’s apartment in the Jakarta area.
The roads appeared deserted, and the day was growing darker. The lingering twilight slowly faded away. The dark sky began to stretch across the horizon.
The driver drove the car at a moderate speed, remembering that the danger no longer threatened them. The vehicle smoothly glided to return to their employer’s residence.
However, before they were completely free from danger, suddenly… SCREECH! Someone rear-ended them.
“ARGH!”
